The international conference "ENERGY FRONTIERS: Science as a Driver of Technological Growth" was held

On May 2, 2025, in the city of Almaty, the international conference "ENERGY FRONTIERS: Science as a Driver of Technological Growth" was held. It was organized by the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in cooperation with JSC "Kazakh Institute of Oil and Gas" (KING). The event became an important platform for dialogue between science, industry, and the international expert community on issues related to the future of energy, innovation, and sustainable development.

The conference was opened by the President of the National Academy of Sciences under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, A.K. Kurishbayev, who emphasized the role of science as a systematic tool for technological progress and the importance of setting clear priorities in the development of research activities. In his speech, he highlighted the necessity of building sustainable connections among all participants of the scientific and innovation ecosystem — scientists, engineers, government, and business.

The keynote speech on current and prospective R&D projects of KING in the fields of geology, field development, and digital technologies was delivered by A.Zh. Kenesary, Deputy Director for Geology, Development, and R&D Projects at JSC "Kazakh Institute of Oil and Gas." He presented a number of initiatives aimed at increasing the efficiency of developing hard-to-recover reserves, digitalizing engineering processes, and implementing modern solutions for the oil and gas sector. During the plenary session, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between KING and the National Academy of Sciences, aimed at consolidating efforts in scientific research and technology transfer.

The conference was attended by international and Kazakhstani experts, including representatives from The Pennsylvania State University (USA), Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia), Baker Hughes (Germany), SLB (Schlumberger), LLP "CT Solutions," Private Institution "Institute of Polymer Materials and Technologies," LLP "Kalamkas-Khazar Operating," and others.

The following topics were discussed:

  • Development of hard-to-recover reserves (HTRR) and enhanced oil recovery;

  • Digital methods for GIS data interpretation and hydrodynamic modeling;

  • Microstructural studies of rocks using high-precision X-ray micro-CT visualization;

  • Development of new technologies for redistribution of filtration flows;

  • Water isolation works and environmentally friendly solutions;

  • Current industry challenges and mechanisms for financing scientific developments.

During the conference, letters of appreciation were awarded to Zholtaev Gero Zholtaevich and Eskozhe Bazar Atashevich on behalf of JSC NC "KazMunayGas" for their contribution to the development of the oil and gas industry, as well as a memorandum of understanding was signed between JSC "KING" and LLP "NEWTECH Distribution."

Based on the results of the forum, proposals will be developed to strengthen scientific and industrial cooperation, support promising research, and create conditions for the commercialization of scientific developments that respond to the challenges of modern energy.
