BOOK BY MARIE FAVEREAU, A SCHOLAR OF THE JOCHI ULUS, PUBLISHED IN KAZAKH

On 8 September 2026, the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan hosted the official presentation of the Kazakh-language edition of The Horde: How the Mongols Changed the World by French historian Marie Favereau, a scholar of the Jochi Ulus and medieval Eurasian history.

The event was organised at the initiative of the National Academy of Sciences in partnership with Steppe & World Publishing and the Embassy of France in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

In her book, Marie Favereau examines the Golden Horde not merely through the history of military conquest, but as a complex imperial system that significantly influenced the formation of Eurasia’s political, economic and cultural landscape. The author pays particular attention to the distinctive governing institutions of nomadic societies, the development of cities and monetary circulation, international trade and diplomacy, and cultural ties between East and West.

According to the scholar, it is incorrect to regard nomadic empires as a peripheral phenomenon in world history. The Golden Horde connected the Eurasian continent along the East–West and North–South axes, contributing substantially to the development of international trade, diplomatic relations, and the exchange of people and ideas. A key feature of its political system was its ability to adapt to changing circumstances and flexibly combine military, diplomatic and economic mechanisms.

During the event, particular emphasis was placed on the importance of studying the historical continuity between the Jochi Ulus, the Golden Horde and the Kazakh Khanate on the basis of reliable sources and modern interdisciplinary methods. Participants exchanged views on the place of the Jochi Ulus and the Golden Horde in world history, the phenomenon of nomadic statehood, and new scholarly approaches to the study of historical heritage.

The publication of the book in Kazakh represents an important step towards integrating contemporary world-class research on the history of the Golden Horde into Kazakhstan’s academic and educational landscape.

The National Academy of Sciences attaches particular importance to the systematic study of the historical and cultural heritage of the Jochi Ulus, making leading international scholarly works accessible in the Kazakh language, and developing international academic cooperation in this field.
