From May 13 to 15, 2026, the historic First Republican Conference of the Kazakhstan Society of Geneticists and Breeders (KOGIS-2026) was held at the Semey Medical University (SMU). This large-scale scientific event, organized by the Republican Public Association "Kazakhstan Society of Geneticists and Breeders," which was established with the support of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, was highly organized and engaging, bringing together leading scientists, academics, and young researchers from across the country.

Akhylbek Kurishbayev, President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, addressed the conference participants via video message, emphasizing the strategic role of genetic research in ensuring the country's biological, food, and medical security. Warm wishes to the delegates were also extended by Professor Altai Dyusupov, Chairman of the Board and Rector of the NAO MUS, Abay Zhanar Kurmangaliyeva, Science Advisor to the Akim of the Region, and Professor Rakhmetkazhy Bersimbayev, Honorary Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The conference's scientific program covered key and most promising areas of modern science, divided into sections:

Human Genetics
Plant Genetics and Breeding
Animal Genetics and Breeding
Microorganism Genetics

During the plenary session, current academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan delivered insightful presentations reflecting the cutting-edge achievements of Kazakhstan's scientific schools. Among them were Erlan Turuspekov, Chairman of the Regional Public Organization "KOGIS" (who highlighted the challenges and prospects of modern grain crop breeding), Mukhit Orynbayev (who devoted a report to the molecular epidemiology of animal diseases), and Honorary Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan Abdirahman Ombayev (who spoke about the breeding and technological aspects of developing the Ordabasy sheep breed).

Unique research results in medical genomics, paleogenetics, bioinformatics, and agrobiotechnology were presented at the conference's dialogue platforms. The most important outcome of the three-day meeting was the collective identification and approval of priority areas for fundamental and translational genetic research in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the medium term—2028–2030.

The First Republican Conference of the KOGIS demonstrated the powerful consolidating potential of domestic academic science and outlined clear guidelines for the integration of education, fundamental research, and clinical and agricultural practice.
